Just a general question to anyone in general... who are the Deaf American Stakeholders? And why has GUAA/FSSA/NAD/California Coalition support been removed from this petition? This smells suspicious. It also has the same problems already pointed out, such as not requiring Fernandes' removal or re-opening the search process. I wouldn't recommend that you sign it and I don't plan to sign it.

I checked around to see if this petition was really legit, and it seems to be. The CEOs of the California Coalition did discuss it last week, and Bobbie Beth Scoggins is known to have worked on it. I'm still not sure about GUAA, but it seems to be legit. FYI.

Gosh. I just checked it out. It's very unfortunate they feel this way. I do not understand why they feel this post is trying to manipulate public opinion - it says over and over again that people are free to do what they want, and the only reason this was posted was because we got so many e-mails, pages, and comments in person asking for something on the site. We certainly never claimed to speak for everyone in the Bay Area. This site is certainly a pro-FSSA site with full support of the FSSA's two demands, but it does not seek to squelch dissent. The webmaster is a social studies teacher with a bachelor's in government with an emphasis on pre-law and civil rights, and she will defend anyone's First Amendment rights, no matter how she feels about what they have to say. This is one reason she does not edit what people submit - she copies and pastes submissions from a wide variety of people, untouched, in order to preserve their First Amendment rights. Dissent on any topic is healthy, as long as it is courteous. We here who support the FSSA fully acknowledge that not everyone in this area will agree with the FSSA's demands, nor with the content on this site.

I would like to believe that NAD and GUAA were active participants in this. I cannot imagine why the people who created this petition would lie about GUAA's and NAD's involvement. That said, I've contacted a GUAA board member who is at Gallaudet right now and am awaiting a response.
I agree with the statement that the organizations that participated in this petition need to actively let their members know about their involvement and support. I believe this would allay many concerns about the petition.

I am sure GUAA ( Andy Lange) and NAD (Bobbie Beth Scoggins - President) were very aware and a active participants in creating and agreeing to this Declaration. These two leaders needs to stand up and tell their respective organzation why this declaration was brought about and why it may be the key to solving this severe crisis facing Gallaudet University. This Declaration allow us to solve the crisis in a lawful and civilize way. So it is up to all the leaders of this Declaration to explain and support this crucial declaration.

Becky, you aren't alone in wondering this. I'm a local GUAA officer and I haven't heard anything from GUAA. As a NAD member who is subscribed to their e-mail notification messages, I have yet to receive an e-mail letting me know this is NAD-sanctioned. And I've heard this from others as well. If GUAA and NAD are truly behind this, they need to get the word out pronto.

My question is, is this really a collaboration between GUAA, NAD and other state organizations? I'm really hesistant to sign something that I don't see that is officially from GUAA or NAD. Until I see that this is OFFICIALLY from GUAA and NAD, then I MIGHT sign but right now. I'm not signing anything!

I'm just now catching up with comment moderation, which is why your previous comment, which reads like a press release and is everywhere in the blogosphere, was not moderated earlier. I just read it.

I agree - we are all in this together!!! And yes, we want nothing more than to allow people to judge for themselves. If people want to sign it, terrific. If not, terrific.

The only reason this post was put up is because people were upset they had signed something thinking they were asking for Fernandes to be removed completely. They are not satisfied with merely suspending her pending an investigation. There were also people who were concerned that this did not call for no reprisals against students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other community members involved in the protest. After different people requested that something be posted for clarification, we posted this.

It is intended to be nothing more than a reminder to read whatever you sign very carefully. It was not intended to discourage people from signing. Again, we at Bay Area POV are not taking a position on this petition. We encourage people to read it fully for themselves, and if they agree, sign. If they don't, don't sign. That's it.

I agree, the declaration was put together by consortium of several organizations, it took time to get everyone to sign off on its language.

Please judge for yourself by reading the declaration. We are not pushing everyone into it but encouraging people to read it and if they agree, sign onboard.
